The anachronistic futurist

parislemon:

Cue dozens of people screaming bloody murder: “THE IPAD IS NOT A PC!!!!!!!”

Cue millions of the rest of us laughing at those people.

Just as with the move from desktops to laptops, the transition to tablets (or “pads” as Canalys humorously refers to them) is underway.

“But, but, but… it doesn’t have a keyboard!” Yes it does.

“But, but, but… it doesn’t have a physical keyboard!” How’s that argument working out for RIM?

“But, but, but… it doesn’t run PC software!” Who gives a shit? Clearly not the people buying millions of the devices each quarter.

All you need to know about the “is the iPad a PC?” argument: are people buying them instead of traditional PCs? Sure looks like it.

The people who scream that tablets are not PCs confuse me. My desktop PC doesn’t come with a screen or a keyboard attached to it, I have to bring my own. The iPad has a leg up on the desktop in that it includes a screen and I can still bring my own keyboard, should I choose to.

If I need Windows applications, I can run a VNC viewer or purchase an onlive subscription. Honestly though, outside of the office, how often does one *actually* need windows apps? I have an android tablet. I’m using it to write this post. I use it to do most of my “pc” tasks when I’m not in the office. There are really very few drawbacks, and the ones that I have encountered I can work around with a little effort. (And the effort is certainly worth the improvements in portability and battery life I get out of this thing.)

If anyone but Apple was selling the top tablet there would be no question as to weather or not it was a PC.

That being said, I really wish someone else, anyone else, would make a tablet OS of the same caliber as iOS (and the rich support from developers) and include in that OS the ability to install applications that didn’t make it through into the “official” app store for one reason or another.
